Organize Your Vital Documents
Simply a must. This world is just too scary today to avoid putting this off any longer!
It is NOT enough to have these documents filed within your filing system.
You need:
- complete sets of all of your vital documents
- set offsite in a secure place
What IF?
- YOUR HOUSE OR APARTMENT BURNED DOWN? Would you remember your insurance company name, policy numbers? Did you get to grab your purse on the way out? Got any Identification? What if you need money, but have no ID to get cash? What if your credit cards are gone?
- THERE WAS A FLOOD, HURRICANE (Think Katrina), OR OTHER NATURAL DISASTER (Did you see what happened in San Diego County recently? Ditto above.
- YOU GET MUGGED OR ROBBED? Do you have a list of all of your credit cards? Bank account numbers?
- YOU GET EVACUATED? Did you know that to get access to your home after an evacuation, you need PROOF - of who you are AND documentation that ties you to the address (like a copy of a utility bill!).
- YOUR CHILD OR ELDERLY PARENT HAS DISAPPEARED? Got a recent photo, fingerprint kit filled out for the police...
Think of how difficult it would be to track down all of this information in a crisis!
YOUR VITAL DOCUMENTS :
- Financial Documents - Mortgage Papers, Lease Agreements, Checking/Savings Account Information (numbers & passwords), Investment Information, etc.
- Legal Documents - Driver’s Licenses, Photo ID’s, Car/Property Titles, Social Security Cards, Powers of Attorney, Marriage Licenses, Divorce Certificates, Birth Certificates, Adoption Papers, Naturalization Papers, Wills, Trusts, etc.
- Medical Documents - current health insurance cards, medical records, doctor’s names and phone numbers, list of current medications, list of allergies, etc.
- Insurance Information - insurance cards and all insurance policies - home owner’s, rental, medical (see above), auto, long-term disability, and life insurance, video/pictures of personal belongings.
- Contact/Personal Information - address and phone lists for family, close friends, work, bank, insurance companies, doctors, police, fire, poison control hotline, hospitals, etc. Separate list for family members, including social security numbers, date of birth, address, home and cell phone numbers.
